Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions regarding unfinished furniture is that it is cheap in price. Although this can be true, this in not necessarily the main reason why consumers choose unfinished over finished.
In actuality, when comparing unfinished to equal quality finished, the unfinished may only be about 15% less then a finished item.

1.) Quality
Unfinished furniture is primarily constructed from solid wood. Although there may be veneers such as furniture grade plywood, it is typically located on sides and shelves which is completely acceptable.
In comparison, much of the finished furniture on the market today contains MDF (multi density fiber) which contains formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is known to have health risk.
2.) Add You Own Style And Color
Unfinished furniture gives the consumer the opportunity to have an item finished their way. Color, style, etc. are all in your control.
Add your own stain color, paint, clear coat choice, knobs and drawer pulls and personalization such as artwork.
With finished furniture, you are certainly limited to the manufacturer's choice of style and coloration.
3.) Save Money
Although unfinished furniture is not always a lot cheaper to purchase However, in most cases you can save an average of 15% or more. In our current economy who can argue with that!
4.) Health Benefits
As previously mentioned, formaldehyde is a common in finished furniture. Although unfinished may have it in some of its glues it is typically not nearly as prevalent.
Another important aspect is that if you are sensitive to chemicals such as clear coats and stains, you can choose acrylic which is water based stains and clear coats. This drastically reduces oders.
I hope that this will give a few reasons to consider unfinished furniture and add some of your own personalization into your home.
